Learn by Watching Beach Volleyball: Patterson/Gibb vs Lucena Brunner 2013 Manhatten Beach Open

This match is a ton of fun to watch.  Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb are one of the best teams in the World and there are many reasons why illustrated through the course of this set.

We're going to pay attention to the team of Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb.  They start with their backs to the camera.

Casey Patterson (Red Shorts, Black Tank Top)
Jake Gibb (Red Shorts, backwards grey hat)

Here's what to watch
  • They play a very up and down game.  Even when they are in trouble, their passes are consistently almost directly in front of them on a nice, predicable tempo.
  • Watch how early the partner not receiving serve begins their transition to set and where they transition to.  This makes the up and down passing game very effective.
  • Casey uses his whole body to set the ball.  This allows him to have a low point of contact and a nice high apex that is easy for his partner to hit.
  • Jake is one of the best blockers in the game.  Watch how he makes his read, moves, loads and launches to get his hands in front of the arm swing of the attacker.
  • Casey gives some great examples of when and how to use a second ball attack.  He is at times deceptive, showing set and then attacking.  He also does a very nice job with his shot selection in these situations.
  • Note the very high stance that Casey plays defense with.  This allows him to read and move much easier than if he was in a low crouch.  Early in the match, he is unable to dig a couple of hard driven balls because of it, but down the stretch it pays off.
